They Have No Wine

When they ran out of wine, since the wine provided for the wedding was all finished, the mother of Jesus said to him, ‘They have no wine.’ Jesus said ‘Woman, why turn to me? My hour has not come yet.’ His mother said to the servants, ‘Do whatever he tells you.’
Jn.2:3-5

The wedding feast has run out of wine. Mary, the mother of Jesus, asks Jesus to somehow resolve the problem. After first indicating reluctance, Jesus turns the water into the very best of wine.

Running out of wine was embarrassing at most, certainly not life threatening. Yet, Jesus allowed this miracle to be the one that revealed who he was, one who has power and authority over all things, including water.

I guess Jesus knew this first public act of his authority would set the clock ticking towards his passion and death. I understand his reluctance. His hour had come. And whose intercession moved his hand? His mother's.

A man will always listen to his mother. Jesus was fully man. Mary has his ear, so to speak. She can plead on my behalf when my "wine" has run out.

Hail Mary, full of grace
the Lord is with thee.
Blessed art thou among women
and blessed is the fruit of thy womb, Jesus.
Holy Mary, Mother of God
pray for us sinners
now and at the hour of our death.
Amen.
