The Lord is close to the broken-hearted; those whose spirit is crushed he will save. Many are the trials of the just man but from them all the Lord will rescue him. Ps.34:18,19
King David wrote this Psalm after he pretended to be insane before Abimelek, who drove him away. It was a low point in David's life but he recognised God's hand of protection and blessing.
Authentic faith sees God at work even in the low times. I witnessed brokenheartedness in public gatherings after the recent Christchurch slayings. The mourning for those killed was palpable yet it was also a time where God felt very close. There was a softness in people in our shared grief. In our repulsion towards the inhuman act of the killings we naturally drew towards the humanity of each other, comforted each other and I saw God at work.
We are told our trials will be many but we will be rescued from them. This takes the long term view. What happens here on earth is not the end of the story, for the righteous or for the wicked. God will have the last say and my hope lies firmly in that truth. The Lord is close to the broken-hearted.
Jesus, you experienced the broken heart of abandonment, yet you waited, trusted and then came the resurrection. Help me in my times of despair to wait and trust in God's rescuing hand.
Little Flower, please pray for me.
